| Islam | monotheistic religion that spread through military actions, merchants, and missionaries it was located mostly in the middle east. |
| Mecca | Arabian city where the Muslim prophet Muhammad was born located on the red sea and was the birthplace of Islam. |
| Muhammad | A merchant born in Mecca he was believed to be the final prophet by the Muslims. |
| 5 pillars | five basic acts in Islam that are mandatory for all Muslims the five pillars are the foundation of Muslim life |
| Quran | A holy book for Muslims. Muslims believe the book is the sacred word of God. |
| Sunni Muslims | 90% of the population they believe that the leader after Muhammed should be wise. |
| Shia Muslims | Smaller group believed that the leader after Muhammed should be someone related to him. |
| Sufi Muslims | Did not focus on intellectual pursuits such as study of the Quran they instead emphasized introspection to grasp truths they believed could not be understood through learning |
| Abbasid Empire | an empire rooted in learning/knowledge they ruled in the middle east scholars traveled from far to study at their center of learning the house of wisdom. |
