Topographic vocab
| Term | Definition |

| Index contour lines | contour lines that are labeled to help you find the contour interval. In bold |
| V's at the stream | point upstream when they cross a stream |
| Legend | explains symbols used on the map |
| Contour intervals | the difference in elevation between two contour lines that are side by side |
| Relief | the variations in elevation of the Earth's surface |
| Benchmark | a point where exactly elevation is known and is marked with a brass or aluminum plate. It is marked BM on the map with the elevation numbers given in feet |
| Hachure lines | regular contour lines with small segments sticking out from it |
| Map scale | Compares distances on the map with distances on Earth |
| Profile | a side, cross-sectional view of a specific area of land, from a topographic map |
| Elevation | how high and low the ground is in relation to sea level |
| Contour lines | lines that connect points that are of the same elevation |
| Gentle | far apart |
| Steep | close together |
| Topographic map | shows the shape of Earth's surface with lines that represent the different elevations |
| Topography | the shape and size of the land features on Earth |
