Topographic vocab

TermDefinition
Index contour lines contour lines that are labeled to help you find the contour interval. In bold
V's at the stream point upstream when they cross a stream
Legend explains symbols used on the map
Contour intervals the difference in elevation between two contour lines that are side by side
Relief the variations in elevation of the Earth's surface
Benchmark a point where exactly elevation is known and is marked with a brass or aluminum plate. It is marked BM on the map with the elevation numbers given in feet
Hachure lines regular contour lines with small segments sticking out from it
Map scale Compares distances on the map with distances on Earth
Profile a side, cross-sectional view of a specific area of land, from a topographic map
Elevation how high and low the ground is in relation to sea level
Contour lines lines that connect points that are of the same elevation
Gentle far apart
Steep close together
Topographic map shows the shape of Earth's surface with lines that represent the different elevations
