What is the appendicular skeleton responsible for? Movement and limb attachment.
What type of bone is most common in the axial skeleton? Flat and irregular bones.
What does the axial skeleton protect? The brain, spinal cord, heart, and lungs.
What is the only movable bone in the skull? The mandible.
How many bones make up the skull? bones.
What are the two main parts of the skull? The cranium and the facial bones.
What is the function of the cranium? To protect the brain.
What is the function of the facial bones? To form the structure of the face and hold teeth.
How many cranial bones are there? 8.
How many facial bones are there? 14.
What bone separates the nasal cavity from the brain? The ethmoid bone.
What bone forms the forehead? Frontal bone.
What bones form the top and sides of the skull? Parietal bones.
What bones form the base and lower sides of the skull? Temporal bones
Name all 8 cranial bones. Frontal, 2 parietal, 2 temporal, occipital, sphenoid, and ethmoid.
What bone contains the foramen magnum? Occipital bone.
Which bone contains the mastoid process? Temporal bone.
What bone forms part of the eye socket and nasal cavity? Ethmoid bone.
Name the 14 facial bones. 2 maxillae, 2 zygomatic, 2 nasal, 2 lacrimal, 2 palatine, 2 inferior nasal conchae, vomer, mandible.
How many ear ossicles are there? Six (three in each ear).
Name the three ear ossicles. Malleus, incus, and stapes.
What is the smallest bone in the body? The stapes.
What bone is located in the neck and not attached to any other bone? The hyoid bone.
What is the function of the hyoid bone? Supports the tongue and assists in swallowing.
How many bones make up the vertebral column? 26 bones in adults.
What are the five main regions of the vertebral column? Cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, coccygeal.
What does the atlas support? The skull.
What is the dens? The upward projection on the axis that allows head rotation.
What bones make up the thoracic cage? Ribs, sternum, and thoracic vertebrae.
How many ribs are in the human body? 24 ribs (12 pairs).
What is the main purpose of the axial skeleton? To protect vital organs and support the central body axis.
