| alibi | cover story, explanation, proof of innocence |
| cliffhanger | suspenseful, an ending that leaves you wanting more |
| deduction | assumption, inference, drawing a conclusion |
| dramatic irony | the reader knows something that the character doesn’t |
| enigma | a puzzle, a puzzling person or occurrence |
| evidence | definite proof or data that leads to solving a crime |
| felony | an offense punishable by more than 1 year |
| gumshoe | detective, sleuth |
| incriminate | to cause to appear guilty |
| MacGuffin | an object/occurrence that sends the reader the wrong way |
| means | the method or ability to do the crime (how the crime was committed) |
| mood | the atmosphere of the story |
| motive | the reason the defendant felt the need to commit the crime, WHY the person committed the crime |
| opportunity | the chance to commit the crime |
| plot twist | an unexpected change/drastic change in the story line |
| red herring | false lead, something to throw one off the track |
| suspect | person(s) who appear to be guilty |
| tone | an attitude of a writer toward a subject or audience |
| voyeurism | secretly watching someone |
| witness | a person who has some knowledge of events of the crime |
