| ballot | A device used to cast a vote secretly |
| Federal Government | a system where power is divided between a central, national government and several regional governments for example states |
| Albany | The capital of New York |
| abolitionist | A person who favors abolishing (ending) slavery. |
| slavery | An act of being forced to work and being the property of someone |
| expansion | Increasing the size of the territory. |
| ¨Bleeding Kansas¨ | Was a nickname given to Kansas because many people were killed, fighting over whether to admit Kansas as a free state or not |
| Kansas Nebraska Act | In 1854 the act was passed and allowed residents of Kansas to vote whether a state would be a slave or free state |
| sectionalism | intense loyalty to one's region or section of a country, prioritizing its interests over the nation as a whole, often leading to division and conflict |

| nationalism | feeling of strong devotion to one's country and a belief that its interests are most important |
