Important Vocabulary in Soul Lanterns

The Night of the Floating Lanterns Every August 6 in Hiroshima, people celebrate Toro Nagashi by floating paper lanterns on the Motoyasu River to remember victims of the 1945 atomic bombing and to pray for peace around the world.
Hiroshima (pronounced here-row-she-muh) A large city in southern Japan, Hiroshima was one of two cities where the U.S. dropped atomic bombs in August 1945, along with Nagasaki.
Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park The park honors the victims of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima by the U.S. on August 6, 1945.
Family Altar Called a butsudan -it is a special place in the home to remember and honor family members who have passed away. Families put things like flowers, food, and photos there, and sometimes say prayers to show love and respect.
Incense Incense is a mix of fragrant materials, often made from wood and resins, that is burned during religious ceremonies to honor gods and ancestors.
nyushi hibaku (pronounced new-she he-bah-coo) A person how was exposed to radiation because he/she entered within 2 kilometers of the hypocenter for rescue activities, relative search, etc. within 2 weeks.
Pika Japanese onomatopoeic word for a bright flash of light, representing the initial flash of the atomic bomb.
Sanitarium A specialized hospital for the treatment of specific diseases.
Jūgoya (pronounced joo-go-yah) Japanese festival for viewing and celebrating the autumn harvest moon.
Kaiten (pronounced kie-ten) a human-guided, suicide torpedo used by the Japanese Navy in the final months of World War II.
Tokkō (pronouced tock-oh) In the Second World War, a doctrine of "special attack" involving suicide attack; it included kamikaze aircraft, but also manned torpedoes (kaiten), explosive-laden speedboats, soldiers with explosives on their bodies or on poles, etc.
Tanka A traditional Japanese lyrical poem that is usually emotional and deals with human relationships, nature, or the poet's personal situation.
Enola Gay The B-29 bomber that was used by the United States on August 6, 1945, to drop an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, the first time the explosive device had been used on an enemy target.
