Errors

TermDefinition
Precision This is how close repeated measurements are to each other.
Accuracy This is how close repeated measurements are to the true value.
Random Error These are unpredictable variations in the value of repeated measurements that vary in both directions around the true value. These reduce precision.
Systematic Error These errors cause all the measurements to shift in one direction from the true value. These reduce accuracy.
Error of parallax This occurs when the observer does not read the instrument at eye level.
Zero Error This occurs when the instrument is not set to zero and all the readings end up out a a result.
Percentage Error (|True value - estimate value| / True Value) x 100
