| Ab- | Prefix meaning away from; Example: Abduct - to move away from midline |
| Ad- | Prefix meaning toward; Example: Adduct - to move toward the midline |
| Ecto-, Exo | Prefix meaning outside; Example: Exocrine - glands that secrete outside the body |
| Endo- | Prefix meaning within; Example: Endoscopy - viewing inside the body |
| Epi- | Prefix meaning upon; Example: Epidermis - Outer layer of skin |
| Anterior (Venttral) | Prefix meaning toward the front of the body; Example: Anterior view - front side of the body |
| Posterior (Dorsal) | Toward the back of the body - Example: Dorsal surface - back of the body |
| Superior | Above another structure - Example: Superior vena cava |
| Inferior | Below another structure - Example: Inferior vena cava |
| Lateral | Toward the side - Example: Lateral incision |
| Distal | Farther from the truck - Example: Distal end of limb |
| Proximal | Closer to the truck - Example; Proximal humerus |
| Ambi- | Prefix meaning both; Example Ambidextrous - able to use both hands |
| Dys- | Prefix meaning bad, difficult, or painful; Example: Dyspnea - difficulty breathing |
| Eu- | Prefix meaning good or normal; Example: Eupnea - normal breathing |
| Homo- | Prefix meaning same; Example:Homogeneous - of the same kind |
| Iso- | Prefix meaning equal; Example: Isotonic - same concentration |
| Mal- | Prefix meaning bad; Example: Malnutrition — poor nutrition |
