| agonist | agent that works like or with (rather than against) another agent |
| antagonist | agent that has an opposing effect or works against another agent |
| circular muscle | muscle that circles a body tube or opening; sometimes called sphincter |
| convergent muscle | muscle that radiates out from a small to a wider point of attachment; for example, pectoralis major |
| diaphragm | he flat muscular sheet that separates the thorax and abdomen; a major muscle of respiration |
| fusiform muscles | muscle that has fascicles close to parallel in the center of the muscle but converge to a tendon at one or both ends |
| lever system | simple mechanical device that makes the work of moving a weight or other load easier |
| parallel muscles | any long strap like muscle with parallel fascicles |
| pennate muscle | muscle with fascicle attachments that appear “featherlike” |
| spiral muscle | muscle that has fibers twisted between their points of attachment; for example, latissimus dorsi |
