QuestionAnswer
Benzodiazepienes MOA, uses, Increases activity of GABA. Used for stopping acute seizures, anti anxiety, and as a sedative.
Diazepam(Valium) Routes and uses IV 1-5 min, Rectal gel 5-10 miin, only lasts 1 hr IV. used to control status epilepticus and not for long term usage.
What is the preferred benzodiazepiene for status epilepticus Lorazepam(Ativan)
Benzodiazepiene contraindications Acute narrow angle glaucoma, untreated open angle glaucoma, or within 14 days of a MAOI, can increase phenytoin levels
Antidote for benzodiazepine Flumanezil(Romazicon)
Dicyclomine(Bentyl) Anticholinergic, antispasmodic, Used for irritable owel syndrome. Relaxes smooth muscle, slows peristlsis. 1-2 hrs 4x a day. 30-60 min before food.
Adverse effects of bentyl Tachy, impotence, decreased ability to perspire, drowsiness, confusion, agitation.
