TermDefinition
Osteon microscopic, cylindrical, structural unit of compact bone, also known as the Haversian system.
long bones cylindrical-shaped bones that are longer than they are wide.
short bones small, cube-shaped bones that provide stability and support in areas of high movement. 
flat bones type of bone that is thin, flattened, and often curved, primarily functioning to protect vital organs and provide attachment points for muscles
irregular bones type of bone that have complex, asymmetrical shapes and do not fit into the other categories of bones
diaphysis the main or midsection (shaft) of a long bone.
epiphysis the end part of a long bone, initially growing separately from the shaft.
epiphyseal line the bony scar of a epiphyseal plate (growth plate)
metaphysis wide, trumpet-shaped region of a long bone between the shaft (diaphysis) and the end (epiphysis)
medullary cavity the hollow, central region within the shaft (diaphysis) of long bones that contains bone marrow, which stores fat and produces blood cells
yellow bone marrow a type of soft, spongy tissue found within the hollow center of certain bones.
periosteum a fibrous sheath that covers bones..
articular cartilage a specialized type of connective tissue that covers the ends of bones in joints
trabeculae each of a series or group of partitions formed by bands or columns of connective tissue, especially a plate of the calcareous tissue forming cancellous bone.
red bone marrow a spongy, soft tissue found inside certain bones that is responsible for producing blood cells.
Haversian canal a series of tubes around narrow channels formed by lamellae.
osteocyte a cell that lies within the substance of fully formed bone
osteoblast the cells that form new bones and grow and heal existing bones.
osteoclast a large multinucleate bone cell which absorbs bone tissue during growth and healing.
canaliculi a small channel or duct.
Lamellae a thin layer, membrane, or plate of tissue, especially in bone.
Endosteum thin vascular membrane of connective tissue that lines the inner surfaces of bones, including the medullary cavity of long bones and the trabeculae of spongy bone.
lacuna a cavity or depression, especially in bone.
blood vessels network of tubular structures that transport blood throughout the body.
Arterioles a small branch of an artery leading into capillaries.
venules a very small vein, especially one collecting blood from the capillaries.
