Bones and Ostean
HBS 1.1.4
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Osteon | microscopic, cylindrical, structural unit of compact bone, also known as the Haversian system. |
| long bones | cylindrical-shaped bones that are longer than they are wide. |
| short bones | small, cube-shaped bones that provide stability and support in areas of high movement. |
| flat bones | type of bone that is thin, flattened, and often curved, primarily functioning to protect vital organs and provide attachment points for muscles |
| irregular bones | type of bone that have complex, asymmetrical shapes and do not fit into the other categories of bones |
| diaphysis | the main or midsection (shaft) of a long bone. |
| epiphysis | the end part of a long bone, initially growing separately from the shaft. |
| epiphyseal line | the bony scar of a epiphyseal plate (growth plate) |
| metaphysis | wide, trumpet-shaped region of a long bone between the shaft (diaphysis) and the end (epiphysis) |
| medullary cavity | the hollow, central region within the shaft (diaphysis) of long bones that contains bone marrow, which stores fat and produces blood cells |
| yellow bone marrow | a type of soft, spongy tissue found within the hollow center of certain bones. |
| periosteum | a fibrous sheath that covers bones.. |
| articular cartilage | a specialized type of connective tissue that covers the ends of bones in joints |
| trabeculae | each of a series or group of partitions formed by bands or columns of connective tissue, especially a plate of the calcareous tissue forming cancellous bone. |
| red bone marrow | a spongy, soft tissue found inside certain bones that is responsible for producing blood cells. |
| Haversian canal | a series of tubes around narrow channels formed by lamellae. |
| osteocyte | a cell that lies within the substance of fully formed bone |
| osteoblast | the cells that form new bones and grow and heal existing bones. |
| osteoclast | a large multinucleate bone cell which absorbs bone tissue during growth and healing. |
| canaliculi | a small channel or duct. |
| Lamellae | a thin layer, membrane, or plate of tissue, especially in bone. |
| Endosteum | thin vascular membrane of connective tissue that lines the inner surfaces of bones, including the medullary cavity of long bones and the trabeculae of spongy bone. |
| lacuna | a cavity or depression, especially in bone. |
| blood vessels | network of tubular structures that transport blood throughout the body. |
| Arterioles | a small branch of an artery leading into capillaries. |
| venules | a very small vein, especially one collecting blood from the capillaries. |
