Thickest layer, contains most pigment cortex
Outer layer of hair cuticle
Center of hair medulla
What are the medulla patterns? Continuous, interrupted, fragmented, solid, and none
How do you calculate medullary index? width of medulla / width of cortex (entire hair)
3 stages of hair development Anagen (hair actively growing, 100 days) Catagen (stops growing, follicles recede, change or turn gray) Telogen (hair becomes dormant, hairs are easily lost)
What medullary index is animal? What is human? .50 or more - Animal .33 or less - Human
3 ways animal hair is different than human hair 1. Animals are spinous/coronal, humans are imbricate cuticles 2. Animals can have banded patterns, humans can't 3. Animal hair is denser toward the medulla, human hair is denser toward the cuticle
What is the function of the cuticle? Protect, hydrate, seal in moisture
What is the function of the cortex? strength, color, texture
What is the function of the medulla? provite elasticity, center, has 5 different patterns
What protein gives hair it's strength? Keratin
How many hairs are typically collected from a suspect? 50-100
Functions of hair Regulates body temperature, decrease friction, protects against sunlight, sense organ for some animals
Different types of hair from human body Head, body, underarm, public, eyebrows, lashes, facial
What features are used for microscopic comparison? Color, length, medulla, diameter
