What is Biological Functions of the Larynx? Airway protection, coughing, and thoracic fixation
What is Speech functions of the Larynx? Voicing, Pitch control, loudness modulation
What are examples of non-speech larynx functions? Coughing, throat clearing, swallowing, and abdominal function
What is the Bernoulli effect? Pressure goes down when airflow goes up
What does the Bernoulli effect do for the vocal folds? It creates suction that helps close the folds
What are the major cartilages? Thyroid, cricoid, arytenoids, epiglottis, corniculates, and cuneiforms
How many cartilages are there? 9
What is intrinsic muscles? Fine control vocal fold movement
What are extrinsic muscles? Position the larynx as a whole
What is the only abductor The posterior cricoarytenoid
What is the main tensor The Cricothyroid
Which muscles abduct the vocal folds Arytenoids and corniculate cartilages
Which muscles adduct the vocal folds Lateral cricoarytenoid, transverse arytenoid, and oblique arytenoids
