Unit 2 Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Suspense | A state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen. |
| Setting | Locations or environments in a story that create tension and anticipation, making readers eager to find out what happens next. |
| Parallel Worlds | A parallel world is another universe situated “alongside” our own, considered a fourth or “other dimension” |
| Source of Horror | The main source of what makes something scary; a haunting, possession, invasion, curse, etc. |
| Supernatural vs fantastic | Something that is beyond scientific understanding or the laws of nature |
| Good vs Evil | juxtaposing morally righteous characters with someone antithetical who is ethically flawed, usually after undergoing a turning point in their life |
| Quest for Forbidden Knowledge | Something humans are not supposed to know! Such as: how to control life and death. |
| Irony | a situation which there is a contrast between expectations and reality. |
| Delays | Dramatic pauses, conflicts are extended (leaving the reader on edge). |
| Sensory Details | Descriptive language that appeals to the five senses to create vivid images in the reader's mind. |
| Conflict | The reader or audience wonders how each conflict will end. |
| Fear of the Unknown | A feeling of anxiety or apprehension about what is unfamiliar or uncertainty about a situation. |
| Foreshadowing | A literary device where hints or clues are given about what will happen later in the story, building anticipation. |
