What is a summary? When you take a larger version of a text and make it smaller (condense it) keeping the author's main/central idea.
Why do we summarize? Helps the reader gain a better UNDERSTANDING of the text
Expository text? to inform or explain

What is the central/main idea of a piece of writing? most important point or message the author wants the reader to understand
What is it called when you put something in "your own words"? paraphrase
Explain what CONTEXT means. Information around the writing (word, phrase, sentence, paragraph) that helps it make sense to the reader
Tell the difference between an excerpt and a passage. Passage: a selection of writing that can make sense on its own, Excerpt: writing that is taken from a larger piece of writing and is not always understood without its context.
