bio study

cell membrane a thin outer layer that controls what goes in and out of the cell
cell wall a stiff outer layer (plants) that gives the cell shape and support
chloroplast the part of a plant cell that makes food using sunlight
cytoskeleton tiny fibers that give the cell shape and help it move
smooth er makes fats and helps remove harmful substances
rough er has ribsomes on it; helps move and make proteins
golgi packs, sorts, and sends out proteins and other materials
lysosome breaks down waste and old cell parts (like the cells cleanup crew)
nucleus the control center of the cell; holds the dna
ribosome makes proteins for the cell
free ribosomes float in the cytoplasm and makes proteins used in the cell
ribosomes in rough er make proteins that are sent out of the cell or to other parts of it.
cytoplasm the jelly like fluid that fills the cell and holds all the organelles
cilia small hairlike structures that move things or help the cell move
vacuole stores water, food, or waste; plant cells usually have a big one
centrioles help the cell divide (found mostly in animal cells)
nucleolus found inside the nucleus; make ribsomoes
