Division

TermDefinition
area model a rectangular model of multiplication or division that represents the total as the area; factors or quotient and divisor are represented by the side lengths
array objects or numbers arranged in equal rows and columns
compatible numbers numbers that are close to the original value and make a problem easier to solve mentally
dividend the total amount that is being divided or shared equally
division the process of sharing or partitioning equally
divisor the number by which the dividend is being divided or shared; may represent the number of groups or how many in each group
equation a mathematical sentence that uses numbers, one or more operation symbols, and an equal sign
estimate a reasonable guess that is close to the exact answer
multi-digit a number made up of more than one 0–9 digit
place value the value of a digit that depends on its location within a number
quotient the answer to a division problem
relationship the way two numbers are connected by a rule
remainder the amount that is left over after dividing
strategy a plan or way of solving a problem or finding an answer
decompose to break apart
