English vocab

QuestionAnswer
foil (as a literary term) a character or element that provides a sharp contrast to another character, most often the protagonist, in order to highlight the protagonist's unique qualities, values, or flaws
hoard (as a noun) a secret store or supply of something valuable or useful, such as money, valuables, or even food, kept hidden away or accumulated for future use
motif (in literature) a distinctive element—like an image, object, idea, sound, or even a recurring phrase—that repeats throughout a work to contribute to the overall meaning and serve a purpose
theme (in literature) An idea about life that the author is trying to convey to the reader
symbol (in literature) a tangible entity—an object, character, color, action, or place—that represents an abstract idea or concept beyond its literal meaning
Appositive a pair or occasionally a series of usually adjacent words, phrases, or clauses (especially nouns or noun equivalents) that have the same referent and that stand in the same syntactical relation to the rest of the sentence
Diction Style of speaking or writing as a dependant upon choice of words
bereft lacking or deprived of something
Pyre a heap of combustible material, especially one for burning a corpse as part of a funeral ceremony
Lament to express grief or sorrow for something
