States of matter.

QuestionAnswer
What is a solid? A substance with a definite shape and volume.
What is a liquid? A substance that has a definite volume but not a definite shape.
What is a gas? A substance that has neither a definite shape nor volume.
What is freezing? A change in shape that occurs when the temperature of particles has decreased energy and a liquid turns into a solid.
What is boiling? A rapid change in state that occurs when throughout a substance changing it from a liquid into a gas.
What is melting? A change in state that occurs when particles speed up and change from a solid into a liquid.
What is evaporation? A change in state that occurs as particles from the surface of a liquid change to a gas.
What is sublimation? A change in state directly from a gas to a solid state.
What is condensation? The reverse of evaporation when a substance changes from a gas to a liquid state.
What is deposition? The change in state directly from a gas to a solid state.
What is boiling point? The specific temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas.
What is melting point? The specific temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid.
