Acids and Bases (pH)

TermDefinition
Corrosive Degradation of materials in reaction between the material and environment.
Litmus A dye that turns from blue to red for acids and red to blue for bases.
pH Scale A scale used to tell us how acidic or basic a substance is. [0-14]
Universal Indicator Changes color depending on the pH of the substance, red = low pH, green = neutral, purple = high, can be in a liquid or paper form
Neutral A solution whose pH is 7. Balance between hydrogen and hydroxide.
Acid A solution whose pH is bellow 7, sour taste. Turns blue litmus paper red.
Base A solution whose pH is above 7, often feel slippery and taste bitter. Turns red litmus paper blue.
Alkalis Bases that dissolve in water.
