Acids and Bases (pH)
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Corrosive | Degradation of materials in reaction between the material and environment. |
| Litmus | A dye that turns from blue to red for acids and red to blue for bases. |
| pH Scale | A scale used to tell us how acidic or basic a substance is. [0-14] |
| Universal Indicator | Changes color depending on the pH of the substance, red = low pH, green = neutral, purple = high, can be in a liquid or paper form |
| Neutral | A solution whose pH is 7. Balance between hydrogen and hydroxide. |
| Acid | A solution whose pH is bellow 7, sour taste. Turns blue litmus paper red. |
| Base | A solution whose pH is above 7, often feel slippery and taste bitter. Turns red litmus paper blue. |
| Alkalis | Bases that dissolve in water. |
