Matter definitions

Matter

QuestionAnswer
Solid A substance with a definite shape and volume.
Liquid A substance that has a definite volume but not a definite shape.
Gas A substance that has neither a definite shape nor volume.
Freezing A change in state that occurs when the tempeture of particles has decreased energy and a liquid turns into a solid.
Melting A change in state that occurs when particles speed up and change from a solid to a liquid.
Boiling A rapid change in state that occurs throughout a substance changing it from a liquid to a gas.
Evaporation A change in state that occurs as particles from the surface of a liquid change to a gas.
Sublimation A change in state directly from a solid to a gas.
Condensation The reverse of evaporation when a substance changes from a gas to a liquid state.
Deposition The change in state directly from a gas to a solid state.
Boiling point The specific tempeture at which a liquid changes into a gas.
Melting point The specific tempeture at which a solid changes to a liquid.
What is a change called going into different phases of matter? Phase change
What are the three phase changes? Solid, Liquid, and Gas.
What is matter? Anything that takes up space (volume).
What is a solute? The substance that is getting dissolved.
