QuestionAnswer
What is anotomy? The study of the structure and organization of the body parts.
What is physiology? The study of how the body parts function and work together.
what is homeostasis? The body's ability to maintain a stable internal environment despite external changes.
What are the levels of structural organization in the human body? Chemical -> Cellular -> Tissue -> Organ -> Organ System -> Organism.
Define the anatomical position? Standing upright, facing forward, arms at the sides with palms facing forward.
Name the two main body cavities? Dorsal and Ventral
What organs are found in the thoracic cavity? Heart and lungs
What are the three main body planes? Sagittal, Coronal, (frontal), and transverse (horizontal)
What is the difference between superior and inferior? Superior = above; Inferior = below
What is the is the basic structural and functional unit of life? The cell
What are the four main types of tissue? Epithelial, Connective, Muscle, and Nervous.
What organelle is known as the "powerhouse" of the cell? The mitochondrion.
What is the epithelial tissue responsible for? Covering surfaces, lining cavities, and forming glands.
What type of tissue connects and support others tissues? Connective tissue.
What are the five main functions of the skeletal system? Support, protection, movement, storage of minerals, and blood cell formation.
What is the structural unit of compact bone called? The osteon or Haversian system.
What is the main function of the muscular system? To produce movement, maintain posture, and generate heat.
What are the three types of muscle tissue? Skeletal, Cardiac, and Smooth
What is the difference between voluntary and involuntary muscles? Voluntary muscles (like skeletal) are under conscious control; involuntary (like cardiac and smooth) are not.
Where are the smallest bones in the body located? Ears (auditory ossicles: malleus, incus, stapes)
Which is not a part of the axial skeleton? Clavicle
Which suture is between the occipital and parietal bones? Lambdoid
The upper part of the sternum is called the? Manubrium
The number of thoracic vertebrae is: 12
