Cell Structure
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell | The basic unit of life in living organisms. |
| Cell Theory: | A fundamental concept that states all living things are composed of cells, cells are the basic units of life, and all cells come from pre-existing cells. |
| Cell Membrane | The protective outer layer of a cell that regulates what enters and exits the cell. |
| Nucleus | The control center of the cell that contains DNA and regulates cell activities. |
| Eukaryote | A type of cell that has a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles |
| Prokaryote | A type of cell that does not have a nucleus or membrane-bound organelles. |
| Cytoplasm | The jelly-like substance inside the cell where organelles are found. |
| Organelle | Specialized structures within a cell that perform specific functions. |
| Ribosome | A small organelle that makes proteins for the cell. |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum: | A network of membranes involved in protein and lipid synthesis. |
| Golgi Apparatus | An organelle that modifies, sorts, and packages proteins and lipids for storage or transport out of the cell. |
| Vacuole | A storage organelle that holds materials like water, nutrients, and waste products. |
| Lysosome | An organelle that breaks down waste materials and |
| Cell Wall | A rigid outer layer found in plant cells that provides support and protection. |
| Cytoskeleton | A network of fibers that provides structure and shape to the cell. |
| Chloroplast | An organelle found in plant cells that captures sunlight to help make food (photosynthesis). |
| Mitochondrion | An organelle known as the powerhouse of the cell because it produces energy. |
| Lipid Bilayer | A double layer of lipids that makes up the cell membrane and controls what enters and exits the cell. |
| Selective Permeability: | The ability of the cell membrane to allow some substances to pass through while keeping others out. |
