Unit 1 Review

TermDefinition
Exposition Beginning of the story Introduces the setting (where and when the story takes place), the main characters, and the initial conflict (problem)
Rising Action The steps the protagonist takes to resolve the conflict Builds suspense because things get complicated and the outcome is uncertain
Climax The turning point of the story The main character comes face to face with the conflict
Falling Action Events directly following the climax The tension from the conflict decreases
Resolution The ending The character(s) often have some type of epiphany or insight as a result of his actions
Imagery Imagery: Language that creates a vivid description using the five senses: Sight Smell Hearing Taste Touch
Flat Characters We know very little about them They only have one or two character traits They have no depth. They have simple roles.
Round Characters They have many character traits They have complex and layered personalities We know the character’s personality, thoughts, and feelings
Static Characters Do NOT change or grow Are the same at the end of the story as they are at the beginning Even when they go through conflict or new environments, they do not change
Dynamic Characters Go through change because of a life event or conflict They have flaws and go through transformations They learn something new about themselves, other people, or their environment
Conflict the struggle between opposing forces
EXTERNAL CONFLICT This takes place OUTSIDE the character’s mind
INTERNAL CONFLICT This takes place INSIDE the character’s mind
MAN VS. MAN Conflict The problem is between two or more characters.
MAN VS. NATURE Conflict The character has a struggle with a force of nature such as a flood, animal, or disease
MAN VS. SOCIETY Conflict The character has a struggle with government or culture
INTERNAL CONFLICT The character has a problem inside his mind.
Elements of S.T.E.A.L Speech, Thoughts, Effects on Others, Actions, Looks
Theme the universal idea, message, or lesson learned in a text.
Topic a single word that describes a key part of the story
