Science vocab for lesson 1

TermDefinition
Matter An object or anything that is made from atoms
Atom The things that matter is made of
Element A chemical substance with a set of properties that cannot be broken down
Nucleus The central core of an atom
Compound Something that is made of more than one element
Hydrocarbon An organic compound that contains only hydrogen and carbon
Solution A chemical mixture
Macromolecule A lipid that is known by its large size
Protein A polymer that help organisms
Nucleic acid The macromolecules that direct proteins to work
Carbohydrate A compound that has carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, it is also known as sugar
Lipid A chemically diverse set of macromolecules that are classified together because they don't dissolve in water
pH A solution that scales things from 0 to 14 most things that have a pH are 7, which is neutral
