3 Branches of Government Vocabulary

TermDefinition
CONGRESS the legislative body, lawmaking group, of the U.S. government. The 2 chambers are the Senate & the House of Representatives *Made up of elected members
MAJORITY LEADER Leader of the political party that has over 50% in each house of Congress
BILL A written proposal for a new law that must be approved by both houses of Congress and the president to become a law
CABINET Members of the executive branch called secretaries, that each run a different department. They advise the president on their specific department
PRESIDENTIAL APPOINTMENTS People the president chooses for certain government jobs. These people must be approved by the U.S. Senate.
IMPEACH to bring formal charges of wrongdoing against a public official, such as the U.S. President.
VETO a decision by an executive authority, such as the President or Governor, to reject a proposed law.
CHIEF JUSTICE the head justice of the Supreme Court
JUDICIAL REVIEW The power of the Supreme Court to determine if any federal, state, or local law OR government action goes against the constitution (unconstitutional)
CHECKS & BALANCES a principle of the federal government, that allows each branch of government to restrict the power of the other 2 branches.
