Thermal Energy
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| states of matter | forms in which matter exists: solid, liquid, gas (and plasma) |
| kinetic energy | the energy of motion (several types: thermal energy, radiant energy, electrical energy) |
| temperature | the measure of the AVERAGE kinetic energy of particles in a material |
| thermal energy | the TOTAL energy due to the motion of particles that make up an object; a larger object with more particles would have more thermal energy |
| heat | the movement of thermal energy from a hotter object to a cooler object; heat is an action |
| thermal equilibrium | when the temperature of materials that are in contact are the same |
| conduction | the transfer of thermal energy through direct contact between objects |
| convection | the transfer of thermal energy through movement of particles through gas or liquid currents. |
| radiation | the transfer of thermal energy through empty space/waves. |
