| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| krebs cycle | takes place in the mitochondria, aerobic cellular respiration that produces carbon dioxide as waste |
| heterotroph | an organism that must obtain its nutritional requirements (food) by consuming other organisms |
| fermintation | the anaerobic breakdown of energy rich compounds (sugars) into energy the cell can use |
| lactic acid fermentation | a process that forms lactic acid (during anaerobic exercise) in the muscle tissues |
| aerobic | relating to, involving, requiring oxygen |
| cellular respiration | process cells use |
| glycolysis | the breakdown of glucose releasing energy; occurs in the cytoplasm of the cell |
| mitochondria | organelle where cellular respiration occurs to produce energy (ATP) for the cell |
| anaerobic | relating to, involving, or not requiring oxygen |
| metabolism | the chemical processes that occur within a living organism in order to maintain life |
| cytoplasm | the material within a cell; the location of a anaerobic glycolysis |
| electron transport chain (etc) | part of cellular respiration occuring in the mitochondria; produces the most ATP |
| ADP | the breakage of one phosphate from ATP |
| pyruvic acid/ pyruvate (base) | a yellowish organic acid that occurs as an intermediate in many metabolic processes, especially in glycolysis |
| acetyl CoA | during Krebs Cycle which enzyme breaks down pyruvic acid |
| lactic acid fermentation | which type of fermentation is used to produce cheese, yogurt, and soy sauce |
| NADH and FADH2 | the electron transport chain uses which molecules to make ATP |
