Study topography

QuestionAnswer
Topography The shape and size of the land features on earth
Topographic/contour map Shows the shape of Earth’s surface with lines that represent the different elevations.
Contour lines Are lines that connect points that are of the same elevation.
Gentle slope If the contour lines are far apart, then that indicates the land has a gentle slope.
Steep slope If the contour lines are closer together, then that indicates that area has a steep slope.
Index contour lines Are bold or thicker lines that appear at every fifth contour line
V’s at the stream Contour lines form V’s that point upstream when they cross a stream
Contour intervals Is the difference in elevation between two contour lines that are side by side
Map scale Compares distances on the map with distance on earth
Legend Explains symbols used on the map
Benchmark Are useful to help determine contour lines
Hachure lines Are lines are regular contour lines with small segments sticking out from it
Elevation The distance above sea level of a given location
Relief The differences in elevation or the overall shape and unevenness of a land’s surface
Profile A formal summary or analysis of data
