| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Topography | The shape and size of the land features on earth |
| Topographic/contour map | Shows the shape of Earth’s surface with lines that represent the different elevations. |
| Contour lines | Are lines that connect points that are of the same elevation. |
| Gentle slope | If the contour lines are far apart, then that indicates the land has a gentle slope. |
| Steep slope | If the contour lines are closer together, then that indicates that area has a steep slope. |
| Index contour lines | Are bold or thicker lines that appear at every fifth contour line |
| V’s at the stream | Contour lines form V’s that point upstream when they cross a stream |
| Contour intervals | Is the difference in elevation between two contour lines that are side by side |
| Map scale | Compares distances on the map with distance on earth |
| Legend | Explains symbols used on the map |
| Benchmark | Are useful to help determine contour lines |
| Hachure lines | Are lines are regular contour lines with small segments sticking out from it |
| Elevation | The distance above sea level of a given location |
| Relief | The differences in elevation or the overall shape and unevenness of a land’s surface |
| Profile | A formal summary or analysis of data |
