| Term | Definition |

| Poetry | Writing that uses rhythm, feelings, and creative language to express ideas or tell a story. It often uses lines and stanzas instead of sentences and paragraphs. |
| Lines | A row of words in a poem |
| Stanza | A group of lines in a poem, separated by spaces; like a paragraph in poetry. |
| Rhyme Scheme | The pattern of rhyming words at the ends of lines in a poem (for example, ABAB or AABB). |
| Figurative Language | Words or phrases that go beyond their normal meaning to create strong images or feelings. |
| Imagery | Descriptive language that appeals to the five senses to help readers picture or feel what’s being described. |
| Metaphor | A comparison between two unlike things without using “like” or “as.” |
| Simile | A comparison between two unlike things using the words “like” or “as.” |
| Hyperbole | An extreme exaggeration used to make a point or be funny. |
| Personification | Giving human qualities or actions to non-human things. |
