chemistry quiz

QuestionAnswer
what is a mixture a mixture contains 2 or more substances that are physically combined and can be physically separated
what are some methods of separating mixtures distillation, filteration, and chromatography
what are the 2 types of mixtures homogeneous and heterogeneous
what is a homogeneous mixture a combination of substances that are evenly distributed throughout, resulting in a uniform composition where the individual components cannot be seen
what are heterogeneous mixtures A heterogeneous mixture is a mixture that has a non-uniform composition, meaning its components are not evenly distributed and can often be seen as distinct parts.
what are the 3 states of matter solid ,liquid and gas
what are the 2 types of phase changes physical and chemical change
what is a phase change it changes physically not chemically like water freezing its still the same chemically
what is the name of gas to solid deposition
what is the name of solid to gas sublimation
what is the name of solid to liquid melting
what is the name of liquid to solid freezing
what is the name of liquid to gas vaporization/boiling
what is the name of gas to liquid condensation
what is matter defined as anything that has mass and takes up space
what is it called when 2 different elements are combined compound
what phase changes are exothermic freezing, condensation, deposition
what phase changes are endothermic Melting, vaporization, sublimation
what does lower and higher temperature mean when talking about kinetic energy the lower the temp the lower the kinetic energy the higher the temp the higher the kinetic energy
what does potential energy do when enegy leaves during a phase change or gains energy when a phase change occurs and energy id gained so is potential energy same with when energy is realesed
What’s the difference between a physical property and a chemical property? Physical can be observed without changing identity; chemical describes how a substance reacts or changes.
What is kinetic energy? Energy of motion.
What does the law of conservation of matter state? Matter cannot be created or destroyed, only rearranged.
Why are changes of state and dissolving physical changes? Because they don’t change the identity of the substance.
What are pure substances Substances with a fixed composition — elements or compounds.
How do you distinguish between elements, compounds, and mixtures? Elements = one type of atom, compounds = chemically bonded atoms, mixtures = physically combined.
What are some typical separation techniques? Filtration, distillation, magnetism, chromatography.
What is energy? The ability to do work or cause change.
What is the SI unit for energy? The joule (J).
What is potential energy? Stored energy due to position or composition (in chemical bonds).
What is the law of conservation of energy? Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed.
What is the difference between endothermic and exothermic? Endothermic absorbs heat; exothermic releases heat.
What’s the difference between heat and temperature? Heat = total energy transfer; temperature = average kinetic energy.
What direction does heat flow? from warmer to cooler objects
What happens to kinetic and potential energy during phase changes? Kinetic energy stays constant, potential energy changes.
What is a heating or cooling curve? A graph showing temperature changes as a substance is heated or cooled through phase changes

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
