Directional Terms

Directional Terminology

TermDefinition
Anterior the front or forward part of a structure or the body.
Posterior at or toward the back of something
Superior higher in position, greater in quality or importance, or showing an attitude of being better than others
Inferior lower in position, rank, quality, or value than something else
Medial relating to the middle or situated closer to the midline of a body or structure
Lateral relating to the side, as in a sideways direction or position, and can also refer to sideways movement
Proximal nearer to the center of the body or the point of origin
Distal located away from a specific point of reference, such as the center of the body, the median line, or the point of attachment of a limb
Coronal/Frontal plane an imaginary vertical plane that divides the human body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) sections
Sagittal plane a vertical anatomical plane that divides the body into left and right sections
Axial /Transverse plane an imaginary plane that divides the body into upper (superior) and lower (inferior) sections
Dorsal Cavity The dorsal cavity is located in the posterior (back) part of the body. 
Ventral Cavity A directional term meaning toward the front of the body. 
Cranial Cavity The cranial cavity is the space within the skull that houses the brain. 
Vertebral Cavity Spinal
Thoracic Cavity respiratory (lungs, trachea), cardiovascular (heart, great vessels), immune (thymus), and digestive (esophagus) systems
Pelvic Cavity bladder, distal colon, rectum, ureters, and in females, the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries
Abdominal Cavity stomach, small and large intestines, liver, gallbladder, pancreas) and the urinary system (kidneys, ureters)
