QuestionAnswer
Cross wiring in brain -left side of brain affects right side of body - right side of brain affects left side of the body
lesion -destroying unhealthy brain cells
optogenetics -uses light to control individual neurons
EEG (electroencephalogram) -readout of the waves of electrical activity in brain using a head cap - used to measure brain response to repeated stimuli or detect patterns of neural activity.
MEG (magnetoencephalography) measures magnetic fields from brain's natural electrical activity
CT (computed tomography) examines brain by taking x-ray pictures to reveal brain damage
PET (position emission tomography) picks up brain activity by showing consumption levels of sugar glucose by each brain part
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) disorients atoms of brain molecules using magnetic fields, causing atoms to emit signals that provide images of soft tissue including the brain
fMRI reveal brain functioning and structure by tracking the blood flow in different areas in the brain to show which are active during specific tasks
default network web of brain regions - supports mind wandering and daydreaming
brain stem -oldest and innermost region -connects brain to the spinal cord
Medulla control for heartbeat and breathing
thalamus -acts as brain sensory control center - receives all sensory info but smell - sometimes directs information from brain to medulla and cerebellum -hub where neural information flows
Reticular formation -helps control arousal and attention (enabling multitasking). -filters incoming sensory information, relays important signals to other brain areas, -A network of neurons in the brainstem
Cerebellum -balance, coordination, and fine motor skills (like writing) -helps judge time, - called "little brain"
cerebral hemisphere two halves of brain
limbic system contains amygdala, hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and hippocampus -does emotions and memories
Amygdala -brain area responsible for fear and aggression
Hypothalamus -below the thalamus -influences hunger and sexual behavior -regulates temperature and thirst -linked to pleasurable rewards and homeostasis
Hippocampus -processes conscious - creates memories (DOES NOT STORE THEM) -shrinks in size as we age
cerebral cortex -outermost layer of the brain -responsible for ultimate control and information processing
Upper brain vs lower brain -upper brain= high order thinking - lower brain= automatic functions needed to keep body alive
Amnesia -loss of memory
Retrograde amnesia -when you can't recall memories before a traumatic brain injury
Anterograde amnesia -when you can't recall memories a a fter traumatic brain injury
cerebrum -handles conscious thought, and voluntary actions. -regulates emotions and distinguishes textures and sounds (sensory perception)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
