AP Psych Mod 10

QuestionAnswer
Central nervous system brain and spinal cord
peripheral nervous system -connects central nervous system to rest of the body
Somatic nervous systen -controls voluntary movements -part of the peripheral nervous system
Brain -control center of central nervous system -makes decisions
spinal cord -carries messages from brain to rest of the body
sympathetic nervous system -alerts and speeds up body -Ex: dilate eyes, increase heart rate, and decrease digestion -part of autonomic system -"fight or flight"
parasympathetic nervous system -relaxes and slows down body -Ex: closes eyes, slows heart rate, and increases digestion -part of autonomic system
autonomic system controls involuntary body functions like heart rate, digestion, and breathing without conscious thought
Sensory neurons -detect stimuli (such as senses) and send information (via electrical signals) to the central nervous system
motor neurons -carry information from central nervous system to muscles and glands
Interneuron -the connector between sensory and motor neurons that allows them to communicate between each other -cause reflexes by making this connection
Neural network interconnected neurons that process and transmit information in the brain
Endocrine system -controls hormones by using glands
Hormones -chemicals that influence emotion and desires
Difference between endocrine and nervous system -Nervous system= Fast Endocrine=slow -Endocrine message lasts a long time Nervous system lasts a short time
epinephrine -adrenaline (hormone that speeds up body reactions)
pituitary gland -releases growth hormones and oxytocin -controls other glands (master gland) -located in core of brain
oxytocin -a social bonding hormone
adrenal gland on top of kidneys and release epinephrine and norepinephrine (adrenaline and noradrenaline) - increases heart rate, blood pressure, blood sugar
Order of movement of electrical impulse (message) from brain to endocrine system brain > pituitary > other glands > hormones > body
Leptin hormone that decrease hunger and regulates energy balance and storage
Melatonin hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles
Ghrelin hormone that stimulates hunger
pineal gland regulate the body's sleep pattern by producing and secreting melatonin
reflex -an automatic, involuntary response to a stimulus, - a sensory neuron detects the stimulus-> sends a signal to the central nervous system which then activates a motor neuron to produce a quick response in a muscle or gland.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
