IAPS Unit B

Chemistry, Atoms, Periodic Table

TermDefinition
Physical property These properties help identify pure substances and never change whether there is a large sample or very small sample of material.
Physical Change a change that alters the form or appearance of a material but does NOT make the material into another substance.
Chemical property properties include pH, the production of a salt when an acid reacts with a metal, or a unique color change in a chemical reaction.
Chemical change a change in which one or more substances combine or break apart to form new substances.
Density The mass per unit volume, specifically grams per cubic centimeter, or grams per milliliter.
Atom The basic structural unit of an element.
Atomic mass The number of protons and neutrons in an atom.
Element A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical or physical means.
Family (of the Periodic Table) Elements with similar chemical properties arranged in the same column of the periodic table.
Period (of the Periodic Table) A row in the periodic table. All elements have the same number of electron rings, or shells.
Metal Category of elements that usually have a shiny surface and are generally good conductors of heat and electricity. These elements are on the Left side of the Periodic Table.
Non-Metal a category of elements that are poor conductors of electric current and heat. These elements are found on the Right side of the Periodic Table.
Metalloids a category of elements that have some properties of metals and some properties of non-metals.
Periodic Table of the Elements An arrangement of the elements in which elements are ordered by atomic number.
Proton positively charged subatomic particle that is found in the nucleus of an atom.
Neutron a subatomic particle found in the nucleus of an atom with no electric charge.
Electron negatively charged subatomic particle that is found in orbits, or levels, around the nucleus.
Nucleus the center of an atom.
Atomic Number the number of protons of an atom.
How to find the number of electrons in an atom same as number of protons in a neutral atom.
How to find the number of neutrons in an atom Mass number - Atomic number
Where Atomic Number is located in the Periodic Table The number on top of the Chemical Symbol
Where the atomic mass, or mass number is located in the Periodic Table The number underneath the Chemical Symbol

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
