| food web | a diagram showing the complex interactions between different organisms in an ecosystem |
| producer | a living organism that produces its own food, such as a plant |
| prediator | a consumer at the top of the food chain who preys on other animals |
| prey | an organism that is killed and eaten by a predator |
| scavenger | an animal that feeds on dead plants or animals |
| consumer | an organism that eats producers and other consumers to get energy |
| decomposer | an organism, like fungi or bacteria, which breaks down dead organisms and returns nutrients to the ecosystem |
| autotroph | an organism that produces its own food such as plants or algae |
| heterotroph | an organism that cannot produce its own food and must get it from other sources |
