Anterior the front part of something, or a position located toward the front of the body or a structure
Posterior further back in position; of or nearer the rear or hind end, especially of the body or a part of it.
Superior a position that is higher up on the body or toward the head
Inferior the lower or below part of the body in anatomical terminology
medial situated near the median plane of the body or the midline of an organ.
lateral sides
proximal situated nearer to the center of the body or the point of attachment.
distal situated away from the center of the body or from the point of attachment.
coronal/frontal plane an imaginary vertical plane that divides the human body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) sections.
sagittal plane an imaginary vertical plane that divides the human body into left and right sections
Axial/ Transverse plane an imaginary plane that divides the body into upper (superior) and lower (inferior) sections
dorsal cavity a single, continuous cavity along the posterior (back) side of the body that houses and protects the central nervous system
ventral cavity a large body cavity located on the anterior (front) of the human body
craninal plane non-contrast computed tomography (CT) scan of the head.
vertebral plane a hollow space within the vertebral column that runs from the base of the skull to the tip of the tailbone
thoracic plane a bony and muscular structure located in the upper torso that protects and houses vital organs, including the heart, lungs, and esophagus
pelvic cavity a funnel-shaped space located within the pelvis, the lower part of the trunk
abdominal plane the large, central body space located between the diaphragm and the pelvic brim, containing most organs of the digestive, endocrine, lymphatic, urinary, and reproductive systems
