Real Number System

QuestionAnswer
What is a rational number? Any number that can be written as (or already is ) a fraction. Includes terminating or repeating decimals.
What is an integer? The set of whole numbers and their opposites. (...-2, -1, 0, 1, 2, ...)
What is a whole number? the set of counting (natural) numbers AND ZERO {0, 1, 2, 3, ...}
What is a natural number? The set of counting numbers. They come naturally to you when you're counting. (1, 2, 3, ...)
T/F: Integers CANNOT include any fractions or decimals. TRUE - There are NO fractions or decimals included in integers. All repeating and terminating decimals stay in the RATIONAL category.
T/F: All natural numbers are also integers TRUE - All natural numbers are also whole, integers, rational and real!
T/F: Some integers are whole numbers TRUE - Some integers are whole numbers, and some are their opposites (negative whole numbers)
T/F: All whole numbers are also natural FALSE - ZERO is not a natural number
What are irrational numbers? These are numbers that CANNOT be written as a fraction - these include non-terminating AND non-repeating decimals (never-ending, with no pattern)
Is the square root of 20, rational or irrational? Why? Irrational - square rooting any non-perfect square will result in a non-terminating non-repeating decimal.
What is the best classification of the number: -15 integer - negative whole number
What is the best classification of the number: -1.2 rational - terminating decimal (NOT an integer!)
What is the best classification of the number: 3.45 rational - terminating decimal
What is the best classification of the number: 8 natural - counting number
What is the best classification of the number: 0 whole - zero!
What is the best classification of the number: 2.9423.... irrational - non-terminating and non-repeating decimal
What is the best classification of the number: -25 integer - negative whole number
What is the decimal form of 28/99 ? .282828.... (I don't have a repeating bar)
What is the term for a decimal that never ends? non-terminating decimal (remember, this is not the same as "repeating")
What is the term for a decimal that has a pattern? repeating decimal
If I have a square rug that has an area of 196 sq. ft., what is the length of one side? 14 ft. -- remember, the area of a square is found by multiplying the side by itself! So you're asking, what times itself gives me 196? In other words, what is the square root of 196?
If I have a square rug that has an area of 121 sq. ft., what is the PERIMETER? 44ft. - You still have to find the square root to get the side length (11ft.), but then you have to remember that there are FOUR of those sides in a square. 11 X 4 = 44
If I have a square rug that has an area of 81 sq. ft., what is the PERIMETER? 36ft. - You still have to find the square root to get the side length (9ft.), but then you have to remember that there are FOUR of those sides in a square. 9 X 4 = 36
Between what two whole numbers does the square root of 200 fall? Between 14 and 15. -- 14 is the square root of 196, and 15 is the square root of 225. Square root of 200 is between these.
