| Salinity | The total amount of dissolved salt in a water sample |
| Sonar | A system that uses reflected sound waves to determine the distance of objects under the water |
| Seamount | A steep sided volcano mountain rising from the deep ocean floor |
| Trench | A deep steep sided canyon in the ocean floor |
| Continental slope | A steep incline of the ocean floor leading down from the edge of the continental shelf |
| Continental shelf | A gently sloping, shallow area of the ocean floor. |
| Abyssal plain | A smooth nearly flat region of the deep ocean floor |
| Mid-Ocean Ridge | An under sea mountain chain where new ocean floor is produced. |

| Wave | A disturbance that transfers energy from place to place |
| Wavelength | The distance between two corosponding parts of a wave |
| Frequency | The amount of waves that pass a given point during a certain amount of time |
| Wave height | The vertical distance from the top of a wave to the bottom |
| Tsunami | A giant wave that is usually caused by a earthquake |
| Longshore drift | The movement of water and sediment down a beach caused by waves |
| Rip current | A strong narrow current that flows from the beach out to the ocean |
| Groin | A wall made of rocks or concrete that is built to stop erosion |

| Current | A large stream of water that flows through the ocean |
| Coriolis effect | The effect of Earths rotation on the direction of the ocean and winds |
| Climate | The average annual conditions of the temperature, winds and clouds in an area |
| El Nino | An abnormal climate event that occurs every two to seven years |
| La Nina | A climate event in the eastern Pacific ocean in which waters on the surface are colder than normal |

| Intertidal Zone | An area between the highest high tide and the low tide |
| Neritic Zone | The area of the ocean the spreads out from the low tide to the edge of the continental shelf |
| Open Ocean zone | The deepest darkest part of the ocean beyond the continental shelf |
| Plankton | Tiny algae animals that float in the water. |
| Nekton | Free swimming animals that can move throughout the water column |
| Benthos | Organisms that live at the bottom of a body of water |
| Food web | The pattern of overlapping feeding relationships or food chains in an ecosystem |
