What is the difference between listening and hearing? Listening is comprehension and Hearing is sound waves.
Why do we use a hook? What is an example of something we can use as a hook? To grab a listeners attention, examples are story, question, voice, picture, etc..
What are the 5 steps to effective listening? 1. Prepare to listen, 2. Personalize that message, 3. Understand the message, 4. Selecting Ideas, 5. Providing Feedback.
List 4 examples of strategies public speakers use to get you on their side. Remember this is why we need to critically listen! 1. Name-Calling, 2. Card-Stacking, 3. Band-Wagoning. 4. Testamonalizing. 5. Slogans. 6. Hasty Generalizing. Need to critically listen so we don't get fooled.
Why do you need to know your audience, and what aspects of the audience must you consider before presenting? So you can relate and connect to your audience. Interest, Age, Gender, Culture, Job, Status, etc..
What should we consider upon choosing a topic for a speech? 1. Does it interest you. 2. Is there enough info. 3. Is there too much info. 4. Is it appropriate for you and the audience.
Why do you need to make sure your topic isn’t too broad? So you have to squeeze it so much information in a small speech.
What is credibility? The perception that a speaker is knowledgeable, trustworthy, and dynamic.
How does a speaker show credibility? State your experiences. Point out research and study on the topic. Make the interest noticeable
What are the 3 purposes of a presentation/speech? Persuade, Inform, Entertain.
What are ways we can reconnect with a distracted/bored audience? Change in tone, engaging, asking questions, humor, and name calling.
What is a thesis statement? Summary of your points.
Name examples of supportive materials? evidence, pictures, information, pictures, quotes, statistics.
Name a few resources where we would find information to research a topic. Library, websites, documentaries, research areas.
Explain the ways we can organize the body our speeches Chronologically, Spatially, Problem/Solution, Cause/Effect, Topical.
What is plagiarism? Stealing peoples work without giving credit.
Name and explain the 4 main methods of presenting Memorizing, Impromptu, Extemporaneous, Manuscript.
