QuestionAnswer
In order to measure population density, what two factors are required? area of the space and the number of individuals
When would the carrying capacity of an area most likely stay the same? after a period of stability
Which of these is an example of a density- independent limiting factor? examples; natural disasters, weather, human activity
Which type of organism would be most likely to have a type 2 survivorship curve? one that is preyed upon throughout its life
Uniform Dispersion occurs when individuals of the same species must compete for limited resources and territory
Clumped Dispersion helps protect individuals from predators and makes finding a mate easier, water/food
Random Dispersion is the least common pattern of distribution and occurs when resources are evenly distributed within in ecosystem.
If population has no known predators and plenty of available resources how might that population change? it would increase
What are the advantages of a slower population growth? Prevents over crowding, reduce competition, keeps resources available longer
Type 1 survivorship curve mammals and other large animals. Few young, parents give a lot of care. Most survive to an old age
Type 3 survivorship curve many young, little or no parental care ( fish, frogs) most die early only a few survive to adults
Exponential Growth occurs when a population size increases dramatically over a relatively short amount of time. Looks like a J- shaped curve.
Logistic Growth population begins with a period of slow growth followed by a period of exponential growth before leveling off at a stable size.
Population Growth depends on the environment and available resources.
What is are examples of density dependent limiting factors? competition, predation, Parasitism and disease
What survivorship type is associated with parental care? Type 1

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
