mic type definitions
what they are used for
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Dynamic mics | less sensitive than condensers and ribbon mics capture less detail as not capture entire frequency range lacks bottom and high end robust and hard to damage and can handle high SPL environments |
| Condenser mics | very sensitive and captures a lot of detail capture full frequency spectrum, fast transient response and can handle high SPl environments Fragile, easily damaged and sensitive to moisture |
| Ribbon mics | Most sensitive but also the most fragile very detailed and capture a wide range of the frequency spectrum but high end is rolled off so darker than condensers a powerful blast of air will cause damage |
| SPL | Maximum sound pressure level - the highest sound level a mic can handle before distorting |
