Chemical Reactions

Chemical Reaction a chemical change; a process that changes substances into new substances (related word: chemical change) Ex: Something that can not be changed back.
conservation of mass a fundamental principle of science stating that matter cannot be created or destroyed in a closed system Ex: Can not be destroyed.
physical change a change in matter that does not affect its chemical composition Ex: Something that does not change chemically
endothermic a chemical reaction that absorbs heat energy Ex: They absorb energy
exothermic chemical reaction that gives off heat energy Ex: It produces heat
catalyst substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction by lowering the amount of energy needed for the reaction to occur, but is not changed by the reaction Ex: Lowers amount of energy
reactant the substances present before a chemical reaction occurs; in a chemical reaction the arrow usually points away from the reactant(s) Ex: This happens before a chemical reaction
product the substances that are formed during a chemical reaction; in a chemical reaction the arrows point toward the product Ex: Formed during the chemical reaction
molecule two or more atoms joined together Ex: Small particles that are combined
precipitate solid particles that have been separated from a solution Ex: Small things that change like smell
decomposition to cause something (such as a chemical) to be separated into smaller or simpler parts Ex: Plants that die break down into nutrients
