Directional Terminology

| Anterior | toward the front of the body |
| Posterior | toward the back of the body |
| Superior | close to the head |
| Inferior | away from the head |
| medial | closer to the body's midline |
| lateral | away from the body's midline |
| proximal | closer to the trunk |
| distal | away from the trunk |
| coronal/frontal plane | longitudinal plane through a body |
| sagittal plane | longitudinal plane through a body |
| axial/Transverse plane | horizontal plane through a body |
| dorsal cavity | consists of cranial cavity and vertebral cavity. (brain and spinal) Houses key components of the central nervous system |
| ventral cavity | consists of thoracic cavity, abdominal cavity, and pelvic cavity. |
| cranial cavity | contains the brain |
| vertebral cavity | contains the spinal column |
| theoracic cavity | contains the lungs, heart, blood vessels, thymus gland, and breast tissue. |
| pelvic cavity | contains the bladder, large intestine, rectum and reproductive organs. |
| abdominal cavity | contains the stomach, gallbladder, liver, colon, small intestine, kidneys and appendix. |
