an- = not, without -osmia = smell lacking the ability to smell; loss of the sense of smell
an- = not, without ox/o = oxygen -ia = condition a condition in which there is no oxygen received from the air inhaled; complete oxygen deprivation
a- = not, without -phonia = voice, sound lacking the ability to produce sound; having no voice
a- = not, without -pnea = breathing the absence of breathing
atel/o = incomplete -ectasis = dilation, expansion the collapse of one or more lobes of a lung
brady- = slow -pnea = breathing slow respirations
bronchi/o = bronchus -ectasis = dilation, expansion a condition in which the bronchial tubes are ab- normally enlarged, causing chronic coughing, thick sputum, recurrent pneumonia, and weight loss
bronch/o = bronchus -itis = inflammation an irritation and inflammation of the lining of the bronchi
bronch/o = bronchus -spasm = sudden, involuntary movement narrowing of the bronchi caused by sudden, invol- untary contractions of the smooth muscle tissue within the bronchi
dys- = abnormal, painful, difficult -phonia = voice, sound a condition in which speaking is difficult, causing the voice to sound hoarse or weak
dys- = abnormal, painful, difficult -pnea = breathing difficulty breathing
em- = within, inside py/o = pus -ema = condition a condition in which there is pus inside a body cavity; often refers to the pleural space; also called pyothorax
hem/o = blood -ptysis = spitting the coughing up of blood or bloody sputum
hyper- = excessive, above capn/o = carbon dioxide -ia = condition a condition of excessive carbon dioxide in the blood
hyper- = excessive, above ventil/o = to oxygenate -ation = process, condition abnormally fast and deep breathing that re- sults in a loss of carbon dioxide from the blood (hypocapnia)
nas/o = nose pharyng/o = pharynx -itis = inflammation inflammation of the nasal passages and the phar- ynx, as in the common cold
pulmon/o = lung -ary = pertaining to fibr/o = fibers -osis = abnormal condition the formation of fibrous scar tissue in the lungs, restricting their ability to expand
pulmon/o = lung -ary = pertaining to hyper- = excessive, above -tension = pressure hypertension in the pulmonary arteries, which may be genetic or caused by conditions such as heart failure
rhin/o = nose -rrhea = flow, discharge discharge from the nose; also called a runny nose
bronch/o = bronchus -dilator = something that en- larges or expands a medication that expands the passages of the lungs
laryng/o = larynx -scopy = process of visually examining examination of the larynx using a laryngoscope, or a thin tube with a light and video camera, inserted through the mouth or nose
endo- = within, inside trache/o = trachea -al = pertaining to in- = inward, inside tub/o = tube -ation = process, condition the insertion of a tube through the nose or mouth and into the respiratory tract to maintain or pro- mote breathing
nas/o = nose pharyng/o = pharynx -eal = pertaining to a procedure for taking a specimen from the naso- pharynx (the region just behind the nares)
pleur/o = pleura -centesis = surgical puncturing the use of a needle to puncture the pleura and withdraw fluid for purposes of testing or treat- ment; also called thoracentesis or thoracocentesis
thorac/o = chest -tomy = surgical incision a surgical incision in the chest wall
trache/o = trachea -stomy = surgical creation of an opening in the body a surgically created opening through the neck into the trachea
pharyng/o = pharynx -itis = inflammation inflammation of the pharynx; also called a sore throat
pleur/o = pleura -isy = condition inflammation of the pleurae; also called pleuritis
pneum/o = air, lung coni/o = dust -osis = abnormal condition a disease caused by inhalation of dust or other irritants; it is one type of a condition called intersti- tial lung disease
pulmon/o = lung -ary = pertaining to embol/o = plug -ism = state of a blood clot or other blockage found in the lungs
tonsill/o = tonsil -itis = inflammation inflammation of the tonsils
