| Sons of liberty | Secret group of colonists founded to protest stamp act |
| Militias | Civilian soldiers who are trained to fight but not part of the regular army |
| Patriots | Colonists who fought against British rule |
| Parliament | The government of Great Britain, Including the king, the house of commons, the house of lords and the prime minister |
| Loyalists | Colonists who remained loyal to the king during the American revolution |
| Redcoats | Nickname for the British soldiers because of their red coats |
| Continental Congress | The Legislative assembly composed of delegates from the rebel colonies who met during and after the American revolution |
| Minute men | Colonists who are ready in a minute to fight the British |
| Boston Tea Party | Boston citizens who dressed up like Indians to dump out tea from the Indian ship and into the harbor as a protest against tea |
| Stamp Act | Tax that the British government placed on books, newspaper, and other documents sold on colonies |
| Boston Massacre | The killing of 5 men by British soldiers on March 5, 1770 |
| Paul Revere | Rode on horseback from Boston to Lexington to warn that the Redcoats were coming |
| Treaty of Paris | Provisional peace treaty signed after Lord Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown |
