Chapter 3 - Mr. Pasone's Enviornmental Science
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Matter | All matter in the universe that contains mass and takes up space |
| Atom | The basic units of matter |
| Element | A chemical substance with a given set of properties that cannot be broken down into substances with other properties |
| Nucleus | The center of every atom, containing Protons, Electrons, and Neutrons, Protons are positively charged, Electrons are negatively charged (also surround the outside of the nucleus), and Neutrons have no charge. |
| Molecule | A combination of two or more atoms of the same or of different types joined by covalent bonds. |
| Compound | A substance composed of atoms of two or more different elements |
| Hydrocarbon | Organic compounds containing only Hydrogen and carbon |
| Solution | A mixture in which all the ingredients are evenly distributed |
| Macromolecule | Large-scaled molecules E: Proteins, nucleic acids, liquids, and carbohydrates |
| Protein | Polymers that serve many functions in organisms |
| Nucleic Acids | Macromolecules that direct protein production |
| Carbohydrate | Polymers that consist of atoms of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen |
| Liquid | Chemically diverse group of macromolecules that are classified together because they do not dissolve in water |
| pH | A scale from 0 to 14 that measures how acidic or basic a liquid is, with 7 being neutral (Middle). |
| [LESSON 2 BEGINNING] - Feedback Loop | A cynical process in which an output is returned as an input to modify or reinforce it's actions, or a mechanism that helps a system self-regulate and adapt by using feedback. |
| Erosion | The removal of soil by water, wind, ice, or gravity |
| Geosphere | Made of all the rock on and just below Earth's surface |
| Lithosphere | The hard rock on the just below Earth's surface - the outermost layer of the Geosphere |
| Biosphere | All the planet's living, once-living, and nonliving things of the environment with which they interact. |
| Atmosphere | Consists of the layers of gases surrounding our planet |
| Hydrosphere | Encompasses all water - salt, fresh, liquid, ice, and vapor - on Earth's surface |
