Argument Noun An attempt to persuade someone on a topic open to debate.
Author's perspective Noun How the author feels about the situation or topic.
Claim/thesis Noun A statement of the author’s point of view.
Counterclaim Noun An opposing claim that disagrees with the thesis.
Credible source Noun A reliable resource the writer can use to cite information.
Formal style Noun Using a professional choice of words and tone/attitude.
Reasoning Noun The explanations of why the author feels the way he or she does.
Bias Noun/verb/adjective General tendency or leaning in one direction; partial toward one view over another.
Refute Verb To disprove a statement or theory.
Relevant evidence Noun Facts, details, examples, etc. that support the writer’s reasoning.
Sound/logical Adjective Complete or comprehensive. A way to describe an argument when it’s based on logic/common sense.
Sufficient evidence Noun When there’s enough support to make the argument convincing.
Transitions Noun Words, phrases, or clauses that help the reader see how your ideas fit together to support your topic.
Fact Noun Information that can be proven, measured, or observed.
Opinion Noun One’s beliefs, thoughts, feelings, or emotions about a topic; point-of-view (informational reading standards).
Rebuttal Noun Response to opponent's counterclaim.
Cede Verb Formally give up rights The business CEO will have to cede his rights after his arrest.
Enterprise Noun Business venture or company The car enterprise was failing.
Capitalistic Adjective Characteristic of an economic system that is privately owned. It was a very capitalistic business system.
Threatening Adjective Dangerous The thief was very threatening because of his gun.
Extinct Adjective No longer existing. Dinosaurs are extinct now
Mutation Noun Change in form, nature, or qualities. He had a severe genetic mutation.
Prevailing Adjective The idea or feeling that is the strongest. The waterpark was the prevailing thought.
Distinguish Verb To tell the difference between things; to show what makes things stand out. I can't distinguish the difference between the 2 apples.
Corroborate Verb To support an idea, statement, or character's point of view by giving more evidence/proof. There wasn't anything to corroborate his speech.
Condensing Verb Making something shorter or more compact by removing extra words/details. The clues were condensing.
Reveal Verb To show/illustrate. I will reveal the surprise tomorrow.
Accurately Adverb To correctly identify something. I accurately answered everything on a test.
Consistent Adjective Done the same way each time. My grades were very consistent.
Evident Adjective Clearly seen or obvious. The crime was very evident.
Latin suffix -tion Word using -tion: Explanation A brief description of something. Your math explanation was helpful.
Latin suffix -ly Word using -ly: Quickly To do something fast or speedy. I quickly ran home.
