CH 3 Lessons 1 & 2 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
matter all materials that have mass is called matter.
atoms Atoms are the basic unit of matter.
element is a chemical substance with a given set of properties.
nucleus Every atom has a nucleus or central core containing particals called protons and neutrons.
molecule A molecules is a combination of two or more atoms of the same type or of different types of joined by cavelent bonds.
compound A substance composed of atoms or two more different tenements is called a compound.
Hydrocarbons Hydrocarbons are organic compounds containing only hydrogyn and carbons.
solution A mixture in wich all ingredient are evenly distributed is called solution.
macromolecules proteins nucleic acids carbonhydrates and lipids are called macromolecules.
proteins proteins are polymers that serve many functions in organisms.
Nucleic acids Nucleic acids are macromolecules that direct protein production.
Carbonhydrates Carbonhydrates are polymers that consist of atoms of carbon, hydrogyne,and oxygen.
Lipids Lipids are chemically diverse group of macromolecules that are classified together because they do not dissolve in water.
pH The acidity or alkalinity of a solution is described by pH.
Feedback loop A feedback loop can either be negetive or posetive.
Erosion the removel of soil, wind, ice, or gravity, can lead to a positive feedback loop.
Geosphere Earths geosphere is made of all the rock and below earths surface.
Lithosphere The lithosphere is the rock on and just below earths surfacethe outer most layer of the geosphere.
Biosphere The biosphere consists of all the planets living or once living things and the nonliving parts of the eviornment with wich they interact.
Atmosphere the atmosphere consists of the layer of grass surrounding our planet.
hyprosphere the hydrosphere encompasses all water-salt,fresh,iquid,ice and vapor-on earth's underground and in the atmosphere.
