clear-cutting a method of harvesting trees in which all trees in an area are cut at once

climateograph a diagram that shows an areas average temperature and precipitation
ceovolution the process by which to species evolve in response to changes in each other
combustion burning the chemical reaction when fuel combines rapidly with oxygen
command and control approach an approach to environmental policy in which a government body sets rules and threatens punishment for violations
commensalism a relationship between two organisms from different species in which one beniffits and the other is unaffected

concentrating solar power (csp) a technology that uses the heat of the sun to generate electricity; mirrors focus on the suns energy, which is used to heat the water that fuels electric power plants
condensation a change in state from a vapor to a liquid
conduction the transfer of heat directly between two objects that are in contact with each other
coniferous a tree bearing its cones that typically does not loose its leaves
consumer an organism that relies on other organisms for energy and nutriants also called hetorotroph
contour farming a soil concervation method in which furrows are plowed across the hillside, perpendicular to its slope
controlled study a study in which only one factor is manipulated or change
deep-wall injection a method of hazards waste disposal in which the waste is pumped into the wall that has been drilled deep beenethe the water,into pourus rock
deforestation clearing a forest for another land use
demand the amount of a product or service people will buy at given price if free to do so
demographic transition a theory that links lower birth rates and death rates in a population to improvements in education, economic conditions, and helthcare
demography the study of human populations
density dependent factor a limiting factorr who's influence changes with population density includes competition predistation and disesse
density independent factor a limiting factor who's influence is not affected by the population density includes catastrophic events
dependent variable the variable that changes in response to the conditions set in an experiment
deposition the movment and accumulation of eroded soil
desalination the process of removing salt from salt water also called desalinization
desertification a loss of more than 10 percent in the productivity of soil due to erosion, deforestation, overgrazing, drought or other factors
detrititivor an organized(e.g,, a millipede or soil incect) that scavengers the waste products or dead bodies of other community members
dose the level of exposure to a pollutant or other hazerdus substances
dose-responce relationship the effect on an organism at different levels of exposure to a pollutant or other hazerdus substances
earthquake the movment of earth caused by shifting tectonic plates
